Red Flags in Children
Severe abdominal pain
Weight loss / poor weight gain
Associated diarrhea
Vomiting
Night-time waking
Fever
Abnormal physical exam
Abnormal bloodwork
Failure to Thrive
A child falling significantly below the normal growth chart. First the weight falls, then the height falls, and finally the head circumferance.
Common GI Problems in Kids
- Gastroesophageal reflux
- Eosinophilic esophagitis
- Peptic ulcer disease
- Celiac disease
- Inflammatory bowel disease
Peptic Ulcer Disease in Kids
Usually high risk groups for H. pylori such as immigrants, first nations, hutterites, etc.
Allergic Colitis
Bloody stolls in a well-appearing infant. Could be allergic to protein in breast milk or formula.
Most symptoms disappear within 1 month of removing the allergen and by 12 months of age, 95% will tolerate the allergen. Generally, these babies do not develop allergies or IBD.
PEG 3350
Used to treat constipation. Breaks up the stools and makes them much looser.
Primary Symptom of GI Disease in Kids
Poor growth.
