August 12, 2015 - Colorectal Cancer Epidemiology and Screening Flashcards
Cancer Control
- Removal of risk factors
- Early detection and treatment
- Reduction of complications
Screening
The examination of asymptomatic people in order to classify them as likely or unlikely to have the disease.
Epidemiology
The study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states or events in defined populations, and the applications of this study to control health problems.
Risks for Colorectal Cancer
Genetic Syndromes and Family History
(Although, most cases of CRC occur sporadically)
Colorectal Cancer Incidence and Mortality
4th most common cancer
2nd leading cause of cancer death
Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
Can reach about 1/3 of the colon
Test Sensitivity
Probability that the test will be positive given that the disease is present.
Test Specificity
Probability that the test will be negative given that the disease is absent.
Relationship of Sensitivty and Specificty
By increasing sensitivity, you lower specificty.
Alberta sets the FIT value for 75 ng, while Quebec sets its for 250 ng. Alberta has a higher specificty, but a lower sensitivity, while Quebec has a respectively lower specificity but a higher sensitivity.
