self report - part 2 questionnaires Flashcards
what are questionnaires
they are like a written interview - can be carried out face to face, online, telephone or post
what are open ended questions
questions which dont have just one answer to them - they can be detailed and subjective
what are close ended questions
questions which require a certain answer such as yes or no
what are issues with open ended questions
1.overuse of jargon
2. leading questions (questions which are worded to suggest a particular answer)
3. double barrelled question (question which asks two things but requires one answer)
4. double negative question (question that contains two negatives)
examples of closed questions
- likert scale - ranking something eg on scale 1-5
- rating scale - respondent identifies value that represents their strength or feeling ab a particular topic
eg 1 = strongly disagree - fixed choice option - (multiple choice)
strength - time and cost
relatively cheap and quick way to gather a large amount of data. increased sample size so representative and can generalise to wider population
strength - private
higher validity due to being able to be completed privately and often anonymously so responses are more likely to be honest
weakness - sdb
social desirability bias risk
weakness - attrition
attrition is dropping out or missing responses - distributing questionnaires en masse means any data collected relies on responses to be returned
response rates are often poor so generalising the sample of results to a large population can be unconvincing
what is acquiescence bias
also known as agreement bias - tendancy for survey respndents to agree with research statements
can be eliminated with lie scales - questions that ask opposite things
