its designed to guide all members of the british psychological society in their day to day professional conduct

when the participants arrive to take part in a study they are given a briefing so they can provide informed consent
what is informed consent
when participants are able to make an informed judgement about whether to take part or not

what is presumptive consent
where is it impossible for the researcher to ask the actual participants, they ask a similar group of people, if they find it ok its assumed the real p. will agree

before participants are recruited they are asked whether they are prepared to take part in research where they might be deceived for its actual purpose
what is retrospective consent
participants are asked for their consent during the debrief after already participating
when can deception be used
when approved by an ethics comittee however participants should be fully debriefed after
what does dippc stand for
deception, informed consent, protection from harm, privacy, confidentiality
what is right to withdraw
all participants should be informed they have the right to withdraw at the beginning if they feel distressed or uncomfortable
what is the problems with the right to withdraw
it causes bias as the ones who stayed are obedient, some may not withdraw due to being given incentives or feeling like they’re the study. however researchers can withdraw data after study
what is protection from harm
researcher should avoid risks great than experienced in real life and stop the study if harm is suspected, might be hard to tell
what is privacy and confidentiality
protects participant’s information and identification, researchers should not record names, should use numbers or false names
