internal validity Flashcards
what is internal validity
the extent to how confident you can be that a cause and effect relationship is established due to the iv acting on the dv only
how can we improve internal validity
how we can increase the control in a study to establish greater confidence in a causal relationship
what are specific ways to improve internal validity
randomisation - random allocation
standardisation
lab experiment
double blind procedure
what threatens internal validity
demand characteristics, investigator effects, extraneous/confounding variables, leading questions
what does face validity assess
does the test measure what its supposed to measure
done by eyeballing experiment or passing it to an expert to check
what does concurrent validity assess
the extent to which a psychological measure is similar to another existing measure and obtains close results
what does content validity assess
the extent to which a test measures a represntative sample of the subject matter or behaviour under investigations (eg your studying apple juices and you use orange instead of apples which is wrong)
improving internal validity:
- closed questions can provide quantifiable data to be collected that can then be statistically analysed, and individual can provide ‘same’ answer
- distributing to a large sample or interviewing large numbers of people increases content validity.
