Repeated Measures Flashcards
positive: particpant variables
control of partcipant variables: indvidual differences controlled - reduces participant variables - more reliable
negative: order effects
participants may perform better or worse in subsequent conditions due to practice, fatigue or boredom which can confound results
positive: amount of participants
fewer particpants needed as all partcipants go through all conditions
negative: demand characteristics
participants guessing aim of study so they change behaviour accordingly
positive: sensitivity
greater senstivity to detecting effects as individual differences between participants eliminated from comparison of conditions
negative: time
time consuming as participants need to spend more time in the study - leading to dropouts or reduced motivation
what is repeated measures design
same participants take part in all conditions
what data does it produce
related data - each participant’s score in one condition can be paired with their other condition score
how can we control order effects
counterbalancing: ABBA format to control order effects
