Science Vocab Ch. 1 Flashcards
Science of life; examines how living things interact how systems function, and how they function at a molecular
Biology
Anything that has or once had all the characteristics of life
Organism
Orderly structure shown by living things
Organization
Process that results in mass being added to an organism
Growth
Changes an organism undergoes in its lifetime before reaching its adult form
Development
Production of offspring
Reproduction
Group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring
Species
Any change in an organism’s internal or external environment that causes the organism to react
Stimulus
Organism’s reaction to a stimulus
Response
Regulation of an organism’s internal environment to maintain conditions needed for life
Homeostasis
Inherited characteristic of a species that develops over time in response to an environmental factor, enabling the species to survive
Adaptation
A body knowledge based on the study of nature
Science
Explanation of a natural phenomenon based on many observations and investigations over time
Theory
Describes relationships under certain conditions in nature
Law
A process in which the procedures used during an experiment may be repeated and the results are evaluated who are in the same field or are conducting similar research
Peer Review
A set of values
Ethics
Assumption based on prior experience
Inference
A series of problem-solving procedures that might include observations informing a hypothesis, experimenting, gathering and analyzing data, and drawing conclusions
Scientific Method
Testable explanation of a situation
Hypothesis
Procedure performed in a controlled setting to test a hypothesis and collect precise data
Experiment
A factor that remains fixed during an experiment while the independent and dependent variable change
Constant
Measurement system whose divisions are powers of ten
Metric System
System of measurements used by scientists, abbreviation of the International System of Units
SI
Quantitative or Qualitative information gained from scientific investigation
Data
Orderly, direct information gathering about a natural phenomenon
Observation
In a controlled experiment, the group receiving the factor being tested
Experimental group
In a controlled experiment, the group not receiving the factor being tested
Control Group
The one factor that can be changed in a controlled experiment
Independent variable
Factor being measured in a controlled experiment
Dependent variable
