RNA Flashcards
Structure?
- contains only ONE strand of nucleotides.
- sugar (ribose) + phosphate + bases – uracil instead of thymine
Types of RNA?
Messenger RNA (5%) -carry genetic information from DNA in ncl to ribosomes
in cytoplasm.
2. Transfer RNA (15%) -carry an amino acid to ribosome + binds its anticodon to
codon in mRNA. Thus synthesising the amino acid sequence.
3. Ribosomal RNA (80%) -in ribosomes, helps in linking of amino acids into
proteins by catalysing peptide bonds.
Different RNA structure types?
Primary: sequence of bases
Secondary: intramolecular base pairs between complementary base pairs
cause hairpins, bulges + int. loops (caused by H bonds)
Tertiary: three-dimensional arrangement of RNA- A-minor motifs, 3-way junctions, pseudoknots, etc.
Quaternary structure: supermolecular organization
How is RNA made?
transcription of DNA
