Respiratory System Flashcards
Nasal cavities
Respiratory epithelium, Olfactory epithelium
Pharynx
Respiratory epithelium
Larynx
Contains the true and false vocal cords. Hyaline cartilage
Trachea
Respiratory epithelium, C-shaped rings of hyaline cartilage, seromucous glands
Bronchi
Respiratory epithelium, isolated plates of hyaline cartilage, seromucous glands
Bronchioles
Mixture of columnar ciliated and simple cuboidal epithelium, a few Clara cells.
Terminal brocioles
Simple cuboidal ciliated epithelium, abundant Clara cells
Respiratory brochioles
Simple cuboidal ciliated epithelium, some Clara cells, some sac like alveoli
Alveolar ducts
Squamous cells with openings to alveolar sacs
Alveoli
Alveolar sacs lined by type I and type II pneumocytes
Respiratory portion
Gas exchange. Respiratory bronchioles, alveoli, alveolar ducts
Conduction portion
Brings air into the lungs. Nasal cavities, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, terminal brochioles
Nasal conchae (turbinal)
Three long, narrow, curled shelfs of bone that protrude into the breathing passage of the nose.
Swell bodies
Venus plexus that helps to warm blood
Respiratory epithelium
Pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium. Contains globlet cells and a thick basement membrane.
Brush cells
chemosensory receptor cells that have synaptic contact to afferent nerve endings
Fila olfactoria
bipolar neurons present in the upper layer of olfactory epithelium
Vocalis muscle
Skeletal muscle in the true vocal cord that allows for voluntary control of the larynx.
True vocal cord
stratified squamous non-keratinized epithelium. Contains the vocalis muscle
False vocal cord
Respiratory epithelium. Inside you find serous/mucous glands
Lungs
Contains a parietal (outer) and visceral (inner) layer
Clara cells
Secrete surfactant and IgA. Highest concentration in terminal bronchioles
Type I pneumocytes
Functional cell of alveoli, squamous epithelium
Type II pneumocytes
They secrete surfactant that prevents alveolar collapse upon exhalation, cuboidal epithelium
Olfactory epithelium
Pseudostraified columnar with sustentacular cells, olfactory cells, and basal cells. Bipolar neurons and Bowman’s glands are located below
