Liver Flashcards
Sinusoids
Vessels of the liver w/ fenestrated epithelium. Both arterial and portal blood mix in the sinusoids as they flow towards the central vein.
Lobule
Contains 5 portal traids at the corners and a central vein
Portal triad
hepatic arteriole, portal venule, bile duct, and lymphatic vessel. Require limited amounts of connective tissue for support
Hering’s canal
Another name for the bile duct. Bile flows out of the liver
Space of disse
space between the sinusoid and hepatocyte
Hepatocyte function
Protein synthesis, metabolism, bile secretion, and detoxification
Kupffer cells
derived from monocytes. Phagocytic cells within the sinusoids
Ito cells
Also called hepatic stellate cells and lipocytes. They are fat storing cells in the space of disse and contain abundant lipid droplets. Under diseased conditions, can secrete type I collagen that leads to cirrhosis of the liver
Bile canaliculi
Carries the bile from around the central vein to the binary ductule. Formed when 2 adjacent hepatocytes join through tight junctions
India ink
Used to identify phagocytic cells
Hepatocyte microvilli
Face the space of disse and increase the surface area for absorption
Hepatocyte
Liver cells that store glycogen, perform gluconeogenesis, and detoxify toxins
Somatomedins (IGFs)
Proteins produced predominantly in the liver that stimulate bone and muscle growth
Centrolobular cells
closer to central vein, more glycolysis and fatty acid synthesizing enzymes
Perilobular cells
Higher oxygen concentration and extra hepatic hormones. More glucose liberating and fatty acid oxidation enzymes
