Resisting SOCIAL INFLUENCE Flashcards
social support
The presence of people who resist pressures to conform or obey can help others to do the same. These people become allies and show that resistance to social influence is possible
How did Asch’ research social support
In a variation study, Asch used a Non-conforming confederate who chose a separate but wrong answer to the other confederates. Placed 4th in line of p.p, naive p.p placed 6th out of 7
WHAT DID ASCH FIND IN HIS VARIATIONS STUDY TESTING SOCIAL SUPPORT
conformity decre4ased in the presance of a non-conforming confederate
when confederate started conforming again, so did the naive p.p - shows dissent is not long lasting
how did Milgram test social support
In a variation study, milgram introduced a dssobedient confederate
Obedience dropped from 65% to 10%
Summary of Social support
-Situational explanation
-Resisting depends on others
-Resistance to SI is increased when someone else resists
-People who resist social influence are known as Ally
-Ally = someone on your side
-Conformity = if someone else doesn’t conform, you are less likely to
-Obedience - if someone disobeys, you are more likely to disobey
-OTW, resist if others do
Locus of Control
Developed by who
How much control a person feels they have over their own life.
Ideas first developed by Rotter 1954
Which type of LOC is less likely to obey
Internal
Which type of LOC is more likely to obey
External
Describe persons beliefs and characteristics of person with Internal LOC
-Believe they have ability to control own lives
-Ability to make own decisions
-Success and failure due to choices they make
-Tend to be more confident and motivated
-Tend to be middle aged
Describe persons beliefs with external LOC
believe they have little control over own lives
-Other people have control so must obey
-Passive and accepting of what fate has in store for them
-Typically younger and elder people
What did Rotter develop to measure peoples LOC
questionnaire - LOC scale
Summary of LOC exam q
Dispositional expl
Measured by Rotter using questionnaire/LOC scale
measured on a continuum
How much control we feel we have
Perception of control
External locus outline
Internal locus outline
details (characteristics)
**Internals are more likely to resist social influence **
what did Holland do (1967)
Findings
Milgram’s baseline study -measured weather p.p were internal or external.
Found 37% of internals did not continue to highest shock (showed resistance
However 23% of externals did not continue
what did Oliner and Oliner do (1988) LOC
interviewed two groups of non-Jewish people who lived through holocaust and Nazi Germany.
They compared 406 people who had protected and rescued Jews from the Nazis and 126 people who had not done this.
Found that group that rescued the Jews had scored demonstrating an internal LOC
what did Twenge (2004) LOC do
analysed data from American obedience studies over a 40 yea period (1960 to 2002). The data showed that, over this time span, people have become MORE RESISTANT TO OBEDIENCE but also more EXTERNAL
