research methods-inferential statistics Flashcards
what are inferential statistics
ways of analysing data using statistical tests
if the result is significant which hypothesis will we accept
accept the alternative hypothesis (directional and non-directional)
reject the null hypothesis
if a result is non-significant which hypothesis will we accept
accept null hypothesis
reject alternative hypothesis
what does the p<0.05 mean
95% confident the result is significant, that the result it due to manipulation of the IV
5% or less chance that the findings of the research is due to chance
what is a type 1 error AKA
false positive
what is a type 1 error
when the researcher accepts the alternative hypothesis when it is false and they shouldve accepted the null hypothesis.
what is a type 11 error
reject the alternative hypothesis when it shouldve been accepted
what is a type 11 errror AKA
false negative
reducing type 1 and 11 errors
reducing tupe 1-use a more stringent significance level
reducing type 11-use a less significant significance level
what are 3 considerations you should make when deciding on a statistical test
- is it a test of difference or association
- is it a related on unrelated test
3.is is nominal , ordinal or interval
what is a test of difference vs association
difference-comparing the data between condtion 1 and 2
eg-if there are different groups in the IV which may impact upon the DV
association-relationship between the data/ correlation between the data
how can you tell if its a related or unrelated test
related-repeated measure and matched pairs design
unrelated- independant groups design
