what is a reflexive verb?
when the subject of an action is also the object that receives the action, that is to say, the subject and the object are the same.
What happens when conjugate a reflexive verb?
The reflexive pronoun “se” which is always at the end of the infinitive eg lavarse detaches and is placed in front of the conjugated verb.
What are the reflexive pronouns?
me, te, se, nos, os, se
What do the reflexive pronouns have to agree with?
The subject eg “tu” and “te”, “ellos” and “se”
conjugate lavarse
yo me lavo, tú te lavas, él/ella/usted se lava nosotros/as nos lavamos, vosotros/as os laváis, ellos/as/ustedes se lavan
Why is “Ana se mira en el espejo”?
Because the subject both does and receives ie Ana both looks and receives being looked at, “Ana looks at herself in the mirror”
What is a reciprocal reflexive?
when action involving two or more people
what does the pronoun mean in a reciprocal reflexive? and why?
the pronoun means:
- to each other respectively, or
- to one another respectively.
Because two or more people are engaged in the doing and the receiving of the same action
abrazarse (reciprocal reflexive)
to hug one another
- amarse (reciprocal reflexive)
