outline approach to rectal exam

A
  • approach cow safely
  • apply gloves and lube
  • grasp tail and move out of way with non-examining hand, slightly raised and to one side
  • stand sideways to cow
  • wipe lubricant from hand onto anus
  • cone fingers and tuck thumb
  • gently ease hand through anus using weight of body (not muscles of shoulder)
  • open hand once anus around wirst
  • ## evacuate feces (too much fecal material in rectum increases risk of tears)
