outline approach to rectal exam
A
- approach cow safely
- apply gloves and lube
- grasp tail and move out of way with non-examining hand, slightly raised and to one side
- stand sideways to cow
- wipe lubricant from hand onto anus
- cone fingers and tuck thumb
- gently ease hand through anus using weight of body (not muscles of shoulder)
- open hand once anus around wirst
- ## evacuate feces (too much fecal material in rectum increases risk of tears)
