fluid therapy prac Flashcards
name the routes by which you can administer fluids to animal and list pros and cons for each
which veins might you use for IV fluids in the dog
- cephalic most common
- saphenous if no access to cephalic
- jugular if absolutely necessary
- femoral vein (deep so not often used)
which veins might you use for IV catheters in the horse
jugular
If it cannot be used, the alternatives are the lateral thoracic, cephalic and saphenous veins, but these vessels are smaller, less accessible, and not as robust, so more prone to damage.
what bones might you use for IO catherterisation
humerus or femur
what will go wrong if you try to administer IO fluids to the humerous or femur in birds
these bones are part of the bird’s pneumatic (air-filled) skeleton, which is connected to the respiratory system (connected to air sacs)
calculate fluid rates (maintenance, deficit and ml/hr) for a 10kg dog with 7% dehydration
how do you monitor ongoing losses in animals on fluid therapy plants
you are trying to set up a 20 drop/ml giving set without a pump. the ml/hr rate calculated is 49.1. how many secounds should you count per drop
