1. semen and indices of quality workshop Flashcards
state at least 2 methods for semen collection and their pros and cons
manual stimulation (AV) pro: replicates natural behaviour con: danger to handlers, requires teaser, shy (dont want to be watched doin it)
electro stimulation Pro: doesnt need to mount (older and injured animals), dont need a teaser (seasonal), higher probability of sample in untrained animal con: may need sedation, may not represent a normal ejaculate, more stressful, can only do so many times
what parameters can be measured on/in collected semen collected in a pre breeding exam. also think how you could do these
- volume
- consistency
- colour
- smell
- motility
- morphology
- concentration
- vitality (live vs dead)
what physiological events and factors influence the production of spermatozoa
- season (winter breeders produce less sperm in the summer –> testes smaller in summer)
- testosterone
- age
- diet
- FSH and LH
-size of testis
which conditions could result in lower sperm output and reduced fertilization ability
- stress
- poor nutrition
- temp
- crytporchidism
- inflammation of epidiymis or testis
what is the role of the epididymis
- maturation of sperm
- storage of sperm
what factors influence the epididymis transit time and the function of the epididymis
- # of ejaculations (more out = more in but less time to mature)
- testosterone
what is the correlation between testes size and sperm production
more testes means more sperm can be produced
