Receptors Flashcards
- These receptors respond to stimuli outside the body.
- Some examples are….
- These receptors respond to internal stimuli
- Some examples are….
- Exteroreceptors
- Photoreceptors within retina
- Enteroreceptors
- Baroreceptors in carotid artery and aortic arch
What specific type of receptors constantly monitor the position and movement of your muscles, tendons, and joints?
proprioreceptors
What are the 6 main types of receptors based on the type of stimulus they detect?
- Chemoreceptors
- Mechanoreceptors
- Nociceptors
- Thermal Receptors
- Photoreceptors
- Osmoreceptors
These receptors detect chemicals in the body such as oxygen in the bloodstream, odorants in the nose, or chemicals in the food you eat?
Chemoreceptors
What type of stimulus do Mechanoreceptors detect?
- respond to the deformation, stretching, or bending of cells
What do the baroreceptors in the aortic arch detect?
Stretching of the arterial wall of the aortic arch
These receptors respond to noxious, potentially damaging stimuli. They are normally stimulated when physical or chemical damage to the body occurs…ie PAIN.
Nociceptors
What class of receptors detect the osmotic pressure within the body?
What is an example of this receptor?
- Osmoreceptors
- Osmoreceptors in the hypothalmus are responsible for detecting body fluid osmotic pressure and assist in teh control of proper hydration of the body
Photoreceptors are found where and do what?
- These are the rods and cones of the eye
- respond to light
This class of receptors detect alterations in temperature and help assist in the regulation of core body temperature…
Thermal Receptors
What are the 3 main functions of the nervous system? Briefly describe each function…
-
Sensory - detects stimuli from inside and outside of the body using receptors throughout the body
- Stimuli from the sensory receptors are sent towards the integration portion of the nervous system via afferent neurons.
-
Integration Center - receives information from the sensory portion of the nervous system and determines the correct response, comparing stimuli to past experience or certain set points
- Usually carried out in brain or spinal cord
- Responses to stimuli are sent via motor or efferent neurons to the effector organs that can respond to the original stimuli
- Motor Response - Responds to the original stimuli with an action to correct or respond to the original signal
This, is an automatic sequence of events that occurs in respone to a stimulus
reflex arc
What are the 3 main divisions of the efferent peripheral nervous system?
Somatic
Enteric
Autonomic
Smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands are innervated by what branch of the peripheral nervous system?
Autonomic Nervous System
