What is statiscal infrequency

A

suggests that behaviour that is rare from general population is seen as abnormal. On distribution curve any behaviour that is 2 or more SI from mean is classes as abnormal

Strength for SI

A

P- practical applications as its used in clinical practice.
E- to diagnose and assess severity of behaviour.
E- for example they are able to use it to diagnose intellectual disabilities as it requires an IQ below 70.
L- important part of applied psychology as its useful in clinical assesments

Limitation of SI

A

P- doesnt diffrentiate between undesirable and desirable behaviour.
E- High IQ is rare and most people wpuldnt even consider it abnormal, however according to thsi definition, high iq is an abnormality despite not needing treatment to turn “normal”
L- not an adequate definition because just because a behviour is rare doesnt mean that it should be classified as abnormal.

A

Limitation of DIHM

A

P- the criteria is too strict
E- Jahoda suggests that if an indivifual fails to meet one or more criteria then they are seen as abnormal.
E- However, realistically most people would not be able to meet all the criteria, which could lead to a misdiagnosis. For eg if someone just lost their job they may be unable to resist stress, which a rational response for some.
L- Therefore limiting the use of DIHM

Limitation of FFA

A

P- hard to identify between people that just have non- standard lifestyles and want to deviate from social norms from people that are actually abnormal
E- Some ppl may want to take part in high risk activities like sky diving which could potential put them and others in danger, making them irrational and bnormal according to this definition.
L- Limitation because it put those that want to make unusual choices at risk of being deemed abnormal and freedom of choice restricted.
