emergence of cog neuroscience Flashcards
Explain cog neuroscience- AO1
*use of brain scanning techniques like fMRI/PET scans to investigate how brain activty may determine int mental processes.
*scientific study of brain structure, processes, chem, responsinble for int men processes.
*comparison to ppl without condition to identify struc diffs/abnormalities.
Example of research into cog neuroscience
*Tulvings investigation into types of Ltm and their location in the brain.
*ppts completed tasks requiring use of semantic, episodic mem under PET scan.
Evaluate the emergence of cog neuroscience
Strengths;
P- scientific methods
E- uses scientific enquiry to investigate human beahviours. Research based on objective and emprival tech lof brain scans like PET scans.
E- used to identify partys of brain involved/ responsible for int mental processes e=for ex Tulvings experiment.
L- increases overall valifity of cog neuroscience ahd raises psychs scientific status.
P- practical applications
E- priniple of theory that from brain scanning tech, specific brain regions have been found to be responsible for int mental processes for eg Brocas area for language.
E- identification of damage to Brocas area led to use of interventions like NEUROREHABILITATION, where indi can recover lost func of speech and therefore improve quality of life.
L- important part of applied psych.
Limitations:
*some of tne research methods used in cog neuroscience lack mundane realism as require VISUALISNG task whilst under brain scan- eg visualising riding a bike to see role of the motor cortex in procedural mem.
E- may not represent the way int ment processes function in everyday life when acc riding bike
L- the findings from cog neuroscience research lack external validity
