Q

Strength of MSM (Clive Wearring)

A

P-Research to support- Clive Wearing
E- has severe amnesia that diabales him from transferring information from his STM to LTM.
E- this is shown when after just having spoken to his wife, when she re enters the room afterjust existing, he greets her as if it was the first time in years taht hes seeing her.
L- This supports the idea the memory is in seperate unitary stores adn that memory flows in a linear way

Q

Strength of MSM (Baddeley)

A

P-Research to support- research studies
E- Baddeley found that mix up words that sound similar whilst using the SStm and mix up words that have similiar meanings when using the LTM. Suggesting that the STM codes acoustically whilst the LTM codes semantically
L- This supports the theory that memory is sepearte unitary stores because the LTM and STM both code differently.

Q

Limitation of MSM (Clive)

A

P- despite clive wearing’s case study supporting that memory has sperate unitary stores, it has low population validity.
E- This is because the research was only done on one person that had an illness that damaged the brain.
L- thefore this lacks external validity as, its difficult to generalise the findings to a wider population as their memory may work differently, thus limiting the support of MSM.

Q

Limitation of MSM (Shallice and)

A

P- *MSM could be too simplistic by stating that LTM… are sep uni stores
E- Their research into STM.. patiemnt kf, not able to recall digits when read aloud to him, but can recall when sees them visually.
E- this suggests that there must be diff stores in STM one to process visual info and auditory.
L- Casting doubt that the STM is unitary.

Q

Strength Types of LTM (Clive)

A

P- Clive wearring
E- Able to still accurately play his musical instrumnets, however he was not able to recall events in his life.
E- This shows that theres different types of tm the fact that he was able to play shows that his semnatic memory was intact whilst his episodic memeory that helps in recalling events was damaged.
L- also to further support, he had amnesia that was caused by a virus that affected his hippocampus, which is where episodic memory is located.

Q

Strength Types of LTM

A

P- theres neuroimagining evidence to support thats theres diffrenet types of LTM
E-ppts asked to perform various memory tasks whilst brains scanned under PET scanner.
E- Found that episodic was found in hippocampus,, etc
L-supports because it showed that theres 3 diff types of LTM located in diff parts of brain, indicating that theyre seperate.
