What is physiological stress
The response of an organism to stressors
How does the body react when encountered by a stressor
Initial response fight or flight
Sympathetic nervous system
Amygdala in brain stimulates the hypothalamus
Activates the sympathetic nervous system which prepares the body for fight or flight
What hormone does the hypothalamus release
Corticotropin releasing hormone which stimulates the pituitary gland to release adrenocorticotropic hormone
What does cortisol stimulate
Gluconeogenesis
Proteolysis
Lipolysis
Reduced inflammation
Suppression of immune system
Reduced wound healing and bone formation
What can lack of cortisol lead to
Addisons disease
Low blood pressure
Hypoglycaemia
Vomiting, diarrhoea and resulting dehydration
