Dentures Flashcards
What is retention
Resistance of a denture to vertical movement away from the tissues
What is support
The resistance of a denture to occlusally directed loads
What is stability
The resistance of a denture to displacement by functional forces
Where does the zygomatic alveolar crest extend from
The zygomatic process in an arc down to the first molar tooth
What does it mean for the denture if it does not extend to the hamular notch
Less likely to have a posterior seal therefore reduced retention
What does it mean for the denture if it goes beyond the hamular notch
The pterygomandibular raphe will dislodge the denture when mouth opens
Where is the vibrating line of palate
The line between the anterior part of the soft palate which is relatively immovable and the posterior part which moves significantly
What do the retromolar pads consist of
Glandular tissue
Loose connective tissue
Lower margin of pterygomandibular raphe
Buccinator fibres
Temporal tendon fibres
Where is the retromylohyoid fossa
Lies at the distal end of the alveo lingual sulcus
What 4 muscles are relate to indirect movement of jaw
Depressor labi inferioris
Mentalis
Depressor angulioris
Buccinator (by action of masseter)
What 6 muscles are related to direct attachments of the mandible
Temporalis tendon
Buccinator
Masseter
Mylohyoid
Genioglossus
Mentalis
What are 6 reasons for a patient wearing a partial denture
Improve aesthetics
Restore normal speech
Provide occlusal support
Spread occlusal load
Provide facial support
Aid mastication
What are 7 requirements of a successful partial denture patient
Pleasing appearance
Comfortable
Allow normal speech
Not influence the health of the supporting tissues
Not influence the health of the natural teeth
Affordable
Acceptance and adaptation by the patient
What are 3 disadvantages of partial dentures
Increased plaque retention
Increased risk of caries, gingivitis and periodontal disease
Traumas from denture components
What are 6 problems of poor OH in relation to wearing a partial denture
Calculus build up on denture
Irritation of gingivae and tissues
Denture stomatitis
Can contribute to angular cheilitis
Further tooth loss
Bacteria links to systemic health e.g. blood sugar control diabetes
