PSEUDOMONAS AND OTHER NON-FERMENTING GRAM-NEGATIVE BACILLI Flashcards
memorization
most common non-fermenter; gram-negative, motile rods with a single flagella (monotricous)
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Culture characteristics of P. aeruginosa:
-Beta-hemolytic
- Obligate aerobe
Characteristic odor of P. aeruginosa:
Sweet or grape-like or corn taco-like odor
Pigments produced by P. aeruginosa:
- Pyocyanin - Blueish
- Fluorescein - Yellow
- Ptoverdin - Green
- Pyorubin - Red
- Pyomelanin - Black
Transmission of P. aeruginosa:
- water aerosols
- raw vegetables
- flowers
Infections caused by P. aeruginosa:
- Nosocomial infections (most common)
- Infection in burn sites, wounds, urinary tract (gives rise to BLUE-GREEN PUS)
- Meningitis
- Chronic pneumonia in cystic fibrosis patients
- Mild otitis external in swimmers (“swimmer’s ear”)
- Eye infection after surgical procedures
- Fatal sepsis; hemorrhagic necrosis (lesions = ECTHYMA GANGRENOSUM)
- “Hot tub folliculitis”
- Osteomyelitis
Toxins produced in P. aeruginosa:
Endotoxin (LPS) - causes fever, shock
Exotoxin A - inactivates elongation factor
Bacteria associated with cystic fibrosis:
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Burkholderia cepacia
Patients with cystic fibrosis and _________ are particularly vulnerable to infection.
Granulomatous disease
Causative agent of Glander’s disease:
B. mallei
Agent of melioidosis (or whitmore disease aka “Vietnamese time bomb”)
B. pseudomallei
Characteristic odor of Alcaligenes fecalis:
“fruity odor resembling apples/strawberries”
