Proteins and Plasma lipids Flashcards
Compare plasma vs serum
Plasma: liquid portion of blood prior to clotting including proteins and clotting factors
Serum: liquid portion of blood after clotting; includes albumins and globuline
What would you use to measure proteins?
Refractometer
Spectrophotometric
What makes up the highest % of plasma proteins?
Albumin (35-50%); made by the liver
If you see hyperproteinemia, what are the two options?
Relative increase (loss of fluid)
Increased production
What ratio can help differentiate dehydration and inflammation by using plasma proteins and fibrinogen?
Plasma protein:fibrinogen ratio
Cows: >15 = dehydration
20 = dehydration
What are some causes of a monoclonal gammopathy?
Neoplasia (multiple myeloma)
Canine ehrlichiosis
Amyloidosis
What are some causes of HYPOproteinemia?
Decreased production
Increased loss
Hypercholesterolemia can be indicitive of what?
Endocrine disease
CHOLESTASIS
Nephrotic syndrome
Hypocholesterolemia can be indicitive of what?
Altered metabolism (inflammation)
What does nephrotic syndrome present as?
Hypoalbuminemia
Proteinuria
Edema
Hypercholesterolemia/hyperlipidemia
If a herd of cattle have an increase in NEFAs, what does that put them at risk for?
post calving metabolic and infectious disease, decreased milk, and decreased reproductive performance
What are some conditions/disorders that can show ketonemia?
All mammals: starvation, prolonged annorexia, or DM
Cattle: DA or hepatic lipidosis
Dog: Lactation or endurance racing
Horses: endurance racng
