Erthrocytosis/Polycythemia Flashcards
Define eryhtocytosis
increased RBC in peripheral blood
increased HCT, RBC, [Hb]
Define hemoconcentration:
increased concentration of blood components due to decreased plasma volume
ie during dehydration
Define polycythemia:
neoplastic condition, increase in all 3 lineages
in veterinary med usually only see RBC increase
What are some common causes of increased hemoconcentration?
dehydration
endotoxic shock
splenic contraction
hypoxic erythrocytosis
polycythemia vera
why does endotoxic shock cause hemoconcentration?
fluid shifts intra to extra vascular
lab findings
neutropenia, toxic changes, thrombocytopenia
What is appropriate hypoxic erythrocytosis?
RBC proliferation due to increased EPO
renal hypoxia
WHat disorders cause hypoxic erythrocytosis?
cardia dz pulmonary dz hyperthyroidism altitude/endurance training some breed disposition
What is inappropriate erythrocytosis?
autonomous secretion of EPO
not induced by hypoxia
can cuase mild to marked erythrocytosis- sludgy blood
What causes inappropriate erythrocytosis?
inappropriate EPO pdx by the kidney- renal cysts, neoplasm
EPO pdx by hepatoma/hetablastoma
schwannoma
leiomyosarcoma
What is primary erythrocytosis?
Polycythemia vera, total RBC increase not due to increased EPO
What causes PV?
neoplasm of erythroid, myeloid, and megakaryocytic lineages
can present as primary erythrocytosis
What are the lab findings of PV
mild-marked erythrocytosis
R/O other causes of erythroctosis
bone marrow
erythroid hyperplasia
myeloid hyperplasia
megakaryocytic hyperplasia
blood [EPO]
should be decreased
