Leukocytes Flashcards
What induces neutrophil production?
CSFs, cytokines
How do CSFs work?
increase cell prolif/differentiation
induction/enhancement of function
What are the 3 stage non-dividing nutrophils that are released in order:
segementers
bands
metamyelocytes
What is aleft shift?
increase in non-segmented neutrophils in peripheral blod
what causes a left shift?
decreased neutrophil reserve
increased demand
What is the normal transit time for neutrophils and their lifespan in tissue?
transit 5-10 hours
tissue life: 24-48 hours
What is the role of inflammatory mediators in neutrophil pdx and kinetics?
stim release of neutrophils from BM
promote margination and adhesion
stimualte migartion into tissue
induce chemotaxis
inhance phag and killing ability
What is a hyper segmented neutrophil?>
5 or more lobes to a nucleus
right shift- old nuetrophils (increased time in circualtion)
idiopathic in horse
What can cause a right shift?
gluccocortocoids
Is hypersegementation a toxic change?
NO
What are toxic changes of neutrophils?
maturation defects
result of accelerated pdx
What do toxic changes indicate?
increased tissue demand via any inflammatory condition
What are the big 4 toxic changes we see in neutrophils?
cytoplasmic basophilia
dohle bodies
toxic granules
foamy cytoplasm
What are 4 caveats to be wary of with toxic changes?
healthy cats have neutrophils w/ dohle bodies
left shift is NOT TOXIC
severe toxic changes assocated w/ poor prognosis
toxic neutrophils can be confused w/ monocytes
What is cytoplasmic basophilia?
increased blue hue to cytoplasm
loss of neutral staining
look for in segs and badns
