Causes of barren mares
- old age
- poor breeding conformation
- uterine infection
- improper nutrition
at what age to mares ‘ reproductive abilities begin to decrease?

feeding a pregnant mare during the last 3 months of gestation and lactation

prefoaling mammary secretions that occur 24 hours before
stage 1 of labor
- restless, lie down, roll, stomp feet, colicky action
- may go on for 12-24 hours
- ends with breaking of the water
stage 2 of labor
- birth occurs
- most foals are born w/in 20-30 mintues
- fetal placenta separates from uterus
- birth must be rapid to prevent hypoxia
stage 3 of labor
- uterus shrinks and placenta is expelled (naturally)
- examine horse post explosion
- placenta is retained after 2-3 hours could cause complications (call vet)
after foaling
- foal weighs 10% of mares body
- navel should be treated w/solution
- nursing should be observed
