When does choke occur?
A
When feed becomes lodged in the esophagus

Cause of Choke
A
When a horse attempts to eat too fast or are fed very finely ground/dry feed

A
Excitement
Lunging to try to dislodge the material

Choke treatment and prevention
A
T: place in stall with free movement of head, remove with naso-gastric tube and lavage/ flush with water
P: deny access to type of feed/circumstances

- stop eat/drink
- paw at ground and turn head
- sweat
- get up and down, attempt to roll
- rapid breathing

Cause and prevention of Colic
A
C - internal parasites - drastic changes in feed - any severe digestive upset P - parasite control program - use quality feeds - always provide salt and water
