CH 10 Integumentary System Flashcards
Integumentary System
consists of skin and its appendages
Appendages of the integumentary system includes
- glands -hair -fur
- wool -feathers
- scales -claws
- beaks -horns
- hooves -nails
Function of skin
- water - proofs skin
- prevents fluid loss
- provides species specific coloration
- provides site for vitamin D synthesis
Epithelial tissue/ Epithelium
tissue that composes skin
Epidermis
the most superficial layer of skin
epi- (above)
dermis (skin)
-composed of squamous epithilium and the basal layer
Avascular layer
- another name for the epidermis
- named this because of absense of bood vessels
Squamous epithelium
composed of flat, plat-like cells
(when arranged in layers it is stratified)
Basal layer
the deepest layer of the epidermis
-cells layer, multiply, and push up in this layer
Keratin
a protein that provides skin with its waterproofing properties
Kerat/o (can also mean horny or cornea)
Melanocytes
- found in the basal layer
- produce and contain melanin
Melanin funciton
- protects skin from the harmful rays of the sun
- is responsible for skin pigmentation
Melan/o
- combining form for melanin
- means black or dark
Ablinism
- the absence of normal pigmentation
- true form = hair, eyes, skin have no pigmentation
The layers of the epidermis
- stratum corneum
- stratum lucidum
- stratum granulosum
- stratum spinosum
- stratum basale
Stratum Corneum
- most superficial layer of the epidermis
- consists of layers of dead highly keratinized and flattened cells
- aka horny layer
