Arthritis Flashcards
Osteoclast
cells that eat bone tissue
Osteoblast
cells that make bone tissue
Osteocytes
old osteoblasts surrounded by bone tissue
What makes up bone tissue?
- calcium -other elements
Joint capsule
membrane or sac that surrounds the joint
- helps hold all the parts of the joint together
Joint capsule layers
Fibrous membrane
Synovial membrane
Fibrous Membrane
the outer layer which is thick and tough and hold the joint together
Synovial membrane
the inner layer which secretes the synovial fluid
Cartilage
lies on the ends of the bones to absorb shock
- its smoothness prevents friction
Synovial fluid functions
- lubricates joints
- prevents wear of cartilage
- allows smooth movement of the joint
- transports nutrients to the cartilage
Ligaments
tough fiberous bands that connect bones to bones
- especially needed for joints
Changes to joints
- worn/thin cartilage
- thin synovial fluid - decreases ability of joint to slide freely
- torn.damaged ligaments - fail to supprot the joint
Cause of Infectious Arthritis
- bacteria enter the body and travel through the bloodstream to the joint, or driectly to the joint by trauma
- bacterial infect the synovial fluid
Infectious Arithritis Symptoms
inflammation, swelling, pain, and fever
Infectious Arthritis treatment
antibiotics and other drugs
