How to evaluate balance?
Divide horse into 3rds
Look at the 3 sections
Neck length
As long as or slightly longer than the other thirds of the body
Head length
Approximately the same length as the neck or slightly shorter
Ideal slope of the shoulder
45-50 degrees
Conformation of the head
Look for a well defined jaw
and a large eye on a wide flat forehead
Calf-kneed
back at the knees (hyper extended backwards)
Buck kneed
Over at the knees
Splay - footed
When a horse toes out and wings when it travels
Pigeon - toed
When a horse toes in and will paddle out when traveling
Bench kneed
Cannon bone is off-centered to the outside
What degree should the pastern be at?
45-50 degrees
Coon - footed
Undesirable slope to pastern
Ideal hind legs (from side)
(with imaginary line from butt to ground) Line touches hocks, run parallel to the cannon bone and be slightly behind the heel
Sickle-hocked
Too much angle to hocks
Post-legged
Horse that is straight in the hock
