Equine Feedstuffs and Nutrient Costs Flashcards
Different feedstuffs supply varying levels of 5 main nutrients which are
Water Energy from carbohydrates and lipids Protein Vitamins Minerals
What % are most nutrient composition or requirements presented
100% dry matter basis
Young, immature plants are high and low in what?
High in protein and energy
Low in fiber and lignin
Anaerobic
Absence of oxygen
In what conditions are silages and haylages stored
Anaerobic conditions, normally in a silo
Grains
High energy source for horses
Contain 50-60% more digestible energy per pound than hay
Oats
The preferred grain of horse
Very palatable
Higher protein content and quality than corn
Not economical per unit of energy
Corn
Most popular energy source
Can be fed whole, shelled, rolled, cracked, or as ear of corn
Higher in energy and lower in protein than oats
More economical per unit of energy than oats
Barley
Good grain
Should be crimped or rolled before feeding
Tough hull
Grain Sorghum
AKA Milo
Should be ground, rolled, or crimped
The kernels are small and very hard
Rye
Poor palatability
Should be processed beforehand if feed
Wheat
High in energy and protein
Should not take up 1/2+ of the grain mix
May form a dough ball in stomach
Should be rolled, cracked, or steam-processed to flakes before eating
