Posterior Triangle of the Neck Flashcards
What are the attachments of the platysma muscle
Fascia above the pectoralis major and clavicle to the lateral neck and onto the mandible
What nerve innervates the platysma muscle
The facial nerve (CN VII)
Describe the borders of the posterior triangle
Anterior = posterior border of SCM Posterior = anterior border of trapezius Base = clavicle
Name the cutaneous nerves of the head and neck
- Greater occipital
- Lesser occipital
- Posterior rami of C3-5
- Supra-clavicular
- Transverse cutaneous of neck
- Greater auricular
Where is the C1 dermatome located
It doesn’t exist
Describe the orientation of the jugular veins in relation to the SCM
External = anterior Internal = posterior Anterior = in the midline of the neck, may be absent
What cranial nerve supplying the upper body appears from underneath the SCM
The spinal accessory (CN XI)
What arteries lie directly underneath the SCM
- Suprascapular
2. Transverse cervical
Describe the pathway of the phrenic nerve in relation to the scalene muscles
It crosses obliquely over the anterior surface of the anterior scalene
Where do the roots of the brachial plexus pass, in relation to the scalene muscles
Between the anterior and middle scalene muscles
What nerve provides motor innervation to the SCM
Spinal accessory nerve (CN XI)
What nerve provides sensory innervation to the SCM
Cervical plexus; C2, 3
What are the actions of the different sections of the trapezius muscle
Ascending = depress scapula Transverse = retracts scapula Descending = elevates scapula and rotates the glenoid cavity
What nerves innervate the trapezius muscle
- Spinal accessory nerve (CN XI); motor
2. Cervical plexus C3, 4; sensory
What is the innervation of the levator scapulae muscle
Dorsal scapular nerve (C3, 4, 5)
