Anterior Triangle of the Neck Flashcards
What structure divides the two triangles of the neck
The sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle
What are the boundaries or the anterior triangle of the neck
Anterior = imaginary midline of the neck Posterior = anterior border of the SCM Base = mandible
How many divisions are within the anterior triangle
4
Name the divisions of the anterior triangle
- Sub-mental
- Sub-mandibular
- Carotid
- Muscular
Name the components of the sub-mental division
- Sub-mental lymph nodes
2. Beginning of the anterior jugular vein
Name the components of the sub-mandibular division
- Sub-mandibular salivary gland
- Lymph nodes
- Facial artery and vein
- Carotid sheath
- Hypoglossal nerve
Name the components of the carotid division
- Carotid sheath
- Branches of the external carotid artery
- Internal jugular vein
- Hypoglossal, vagus and accessory nerves
Name the components of the muscular division
- Thyroid gland
- Larynx
- Trachea
- Oesophagus
What muscles are associated with the muscular division
The strap muscles of the neck (infrahyoid muscles)
Describe the proximal and distal attachments of the platysma muscle
From the fascia above the pectoralis major and clavicle to the lateral neck and mandible
What nerve innervates the platysma muscle
The facial nerve (CN VII)
Describe the orientation of the jugular veins in relation to the SCM
External = anterior to the SCM Internal = posterior to the SCM
What is the root value of the cervical plexus
Anterior rami of C1-4
What fascia covers the cervical plexus
The pre-vertebral layer of deep cervical fascia
What is the anatomical term of the external ear
The auricle
What is the root value of the ansa cervicalis
C1, 2, 3
Where is the suprahyoid space located
Between the hyoid bone and the mandible/skull
Where is the infrahyoid space located
Between the hyoid bone and the sternum or thyroid cartilage
Name the suprahyoid muscles
- Mylohyoid
- Geniohyoid
- Stylohyoid
- Digastric (2 bellies)
Describe the innervation of the suprahyoid muscles
Facial nerve = posterior belly of the digastric muscle, and the stylohyoid muscle
Mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve = anterior belly of the digastric muscle, and the mylohyoid muscle
Hypoglossal nerve = geniohyoid
What is the function of the suprahyoid muscles
Raise the hyoid bone or depress the mandible
Name the infrahyoid muscles
- Sternohyoid
- Omohyoid
- Sternothyroid
- Thyrohyoid
What is the function of the infrahyoid muscles
Depress the hyoid bone/thyroid cartilage
Describe the innervation of the infrahyoid muscles
Ansa cervicalis = sternohyoid, omohyoid, and sternothryoid
Hypoglossal nerve = thyrohyoid
