Plant Protective System Flashcards
TRA00055
What are the two subsystems of PPS?
- Reactor Shutdown System (RSS)
- Engineered Safety Feature (ESF)
What is the purpose of the Reactor Shutdown System (RSS)?
Designed to protect the nuclear aspects (thermal margins and core limits) of the plant.
What is the purpose of the Engineered Safety Feature System (ESF)?
Designed to protect the mechanical nature of the plant (PCS piping, core configuration, and fission release to the environment.
What are the design features of RSS?

What is the fundamental mechanical purpose of the RSS?
To insert the safety rods.
What three forces work to insert the safety rod?
Safety Rod Drive Package Scram Spring
Core D/P

What is the purpose of Neutron Level Scram?
Limit power level.
What is the purpose of Wide Range Neutron Level Scram?
Limit power level and rate of change.
What is the purpose of Quadrant Differential Temperature Scram?
Slow power increases and power imbalance accidents.
What is the purpose of Fission Break Scram?
High radiation fields in the PCS detects fuel element cladding failure.
What is the purpose of the vessel inlet and outlet temperature scrams?
Protects the core and PCS.
What is the purpose of the Emergency Pump Recirculation Flow Scram?
Assures minimum flow through the core in the event of a loss of commercial power for the PCPs.
What is the purpose of the Emergency Flow Scram?
Protects against low primary coolant flow events during depressurized operation.
What is the purpose of the Seismic Scram?
Low-level acceleration that could be a precursor to a significant shock wave from a seismic event.
What is the purpose of the vessel DP Scram?
Terminate operation for low-flow events.
What is the purpose of the vessel outlet pressure scram?
Diverse scram to inlet pressure High.
List ESF/RSS Functions.
Vessel Outlet Pressure Low
Vessel Inlet Pressure High
Vessel Inlet Pressure Low
Vessel Differential Pressure High
Vessel Level Low
What does Vessel Outlet Pressure Low ESF do?
LOCA ESF secures the PCPs.
What does Vessel Inlet Pressure High ESF do?
Secures PZR and GSW Pumps.
What does Vessel Inlet Pressure Low ESF do?
LOCA ESF secures PCPs
What does Vessel Differential Pressure High ESF do?
DP ESF may secure PCPs
What does Vessel Level Low ESF do?
Alarm only.
