Gas Cooled Experiments Flashcards
TRA00313
What is a gas cooled/lead experiment?
Encapsulated experiment with instrumentation lines exiting the capsule and can have a system for measuring and controlling temp and pressure.
What two gasses are typically used in gas cooled experiments?
helium/neon or helium/argon
How is temperature controlled across the gas gap?
Adjusting the ratio of gases.
Impact of helium concentration on cooling?
Helium has a higher thermal conductivity than neon or argon, therefore more helium equals more heat removal.
Draw one-line diagram of gas cooling system
In which cubicle are gas cooled experiment equipment located?
1B
How are the gases blended in ratio?
Via mass flow control cabinet.
What is the emergency cooling gas for gas cooled experiments?
Facility helium supply.
How is excess bypass flow limited in the helium line?
Orifice
Which gasses are cooling/heating gases?
Helium is a cooling gas
Argon/neon are heating gases.
Advantage of argon over neon?
Argon has larger temp control range.
Disadvantage of argon to neon?
Argon activates
What is the function of the 3-way valve positions?
1 - helium-neon/argon blend to the experiment
2 - helium dump to the experiment (to place test in a safe condition)
What is the purpose of the moisture sensor in the gas cooled experiments?
Checks for failure of capsule pressure boundary.
What impact does a high moisture in a gas cooled test have?
Automatic isolation of the test.
Bypassing moisture interlock?
Possible to bypass via DCS.
Where is the argon delay tank?
OSCC Corridor
How long does it take for Argon gas to pass through the delay tank?
~35 hours
What is the half-life of Ar-41?
1.82 hours
How many tubes deliver gas flow to/from the experiment?
6 lines influent, 1 line effluent
Where do the experiment lines connect to the experiment?
Through an L-flange in the nozzle trench.
What are the power supplies to gas experiment loops?
Commercial power 1C-E-85
Diesel/Commercial power E-244/1285
UPS power E-85
Give each RPU power supply.
RPU-1 1C-E-84 Comm
RPU-2 1C-E-84 Comm
RPU-3 1C-E-84 Comm
RPU-4 E-244 Diesel/Comm
RPU-5 E-244 Diesel/Comm
RPU-6 E-1285 Diesel/Comm
RPU-7 E-1285 Diesel/Comm
All backed by E-85 LOCS UPS
Where are RPU-1 and 2 located?
Outside sub-pile room.
Where are RPU-3/4/5 located?
Outside 1B primary cubicle
Where are RPU-6/7 located?
Outside 1A Primary Cubicle
Where is engineering workstation 2 located?
Second basement, east side
Where is LOCS 2 Safe located?
Second Basement, east side
Describe Helium purge.
Occurs automatically on HiHi Temp alarm.
Sets Helium mass flow controller to 100% in manual and neon to 0%. Can be manually initiated from DCS
Describe Helium dump.
Occurs at 50F above HiHi Temp alarm. Full helium flow sent to the test and blocks mixture. Lasts for 120 seconds and then resets.
Where can you find abnormal/emergency operation guidance for gas cooled loops?
In the EOILs
Required actions for loss of ups or comm electrical power?
No immediate actions
capsule gas supply and temp control remain operational in automatic.
Place all capsules in PURGE
For ups - monitor from 1B
For comm - monitor from LCA
Response to loss of diesel/comm power?
Capsule gas supply and temp control in 1B cubicle fail to full helium flow.
Control and monitoring available from LCA
LCA op station 2 OOS
Place all capsules in PURGE
