PHYS Introduction to the ANS Flashcards
Divisions of the PNS
Affferent
Efferent
Nerves in the Afferent PNS Division
o Somatic sensory
o Visceral sensory
o Special sensory
Nerves in the Efferent PNS Division
o Somatic motor
o Autonomic motor (ANS) – main task is maintenance of homeostatic mechanisms
Classifications of Autonomic Motor of Efferent Division
Sympathetic – fight/flight
* CNS Exit Point: thoracic & lumbar regions of SC (thoracolumbar division)
* Location of ganglia: close to SC -> form sympathetic trunk
Parasympathetic – rest/digest
* CNS Exit Point: level of brainstem & sacral portion of SC (craniosacral division)
* Location of ganglia: within/close to the organs that the post-ganglionic nerves innervate.
Enteric
Exit point of Symp. Nerves
T & L regions
Exit point of Paras. Nerves
Brainstem & S
Location of ganglia for Symp. NS
Close to spinal cord -> form sympathetic trunk
Location of ganglia for Parasymapthetic Nervous System
Within/close to organs they innervate.
Which part of the brain has the most direct influence over autonomic functions?
Reticular formation of the brainstem.
