PHARM Inotropic Agents Flashcards
Basic PHYS behind right heart failure symptoms
Oedema, JVP elevation, hepatomegaly due to back pressure in systemic circulation.
Basic PHYS behind left heart failure symptoms
Dyspnoea, orthopnea, oedema, tachycardia due to back pressure to pulmonary circulation.
Preload vs afterload
Preload - stretch of ventricular muscle (increased by increasing blood volume, venoconstriction)
Afterload - resistance to ventricular emptying (increased by arterial/peripheral vasoconstriction)
Effect of preload and afterload on CO
Preload - increase CO
Afterload - decrease CO
Effect of diastolic heart failure on CO
Preserved CO @ rest, reduced CO @ exercise.
HFpEF
Effect of systolic heart failure on CO
Reduced CO
