System 1 vs System 2 Thinking
System 1: Fast, ‘auto-pilot,’ frequent, emotional, stereotypic, unconscious…
System 2: Slow, effortful, infrequent, logical, calculating, conscious…
NB: Repetition in System 2 can develop into System 1 decision making.
Bigg’s Model of Learning
SA (aim to avoid failure) - reproduce essentials via rote learning
AA (based on comp. & ego-enhancement) - behaving as a ‘model’ student
DA (satisfy interest & max. competence) - students read widely & relate w previous relevant knowledge
Confirmation Bias
Tendency to interpret new evidence as confirmation of one’s existing beliefs/theories.
Anchoring Bias
When people rely too much on pre-existing information or the first information they find when making decisions.
Sunk Cost Bias
Tendency to continue an endeavour once an investment in money, effort or time has been made.
Availability Bias
Tendency to think that examples of things that come readily to mind are more representative than is actually the case.
Stereotyping Bias
Unconscious attribution of particular qualities to a member of a certain social group.
Framing Bias
Bias due to context in which choices are presented.
Dunning-Kruger Effect
Tendency of individuals to hold overly favourable views of their actions.
