PHARM DMARDs Flashcards
Purulent Inflammation
Purulent inflammation – inflammation resulting in large amounts of pus, which consists of neutrophils, dead cells & fluid.
Abscess
Abscess – confined pocket of pus that collects in tissues, organs or spaces inside the body.
Arthritis vs althralgia
Arthritis vs arthralgia - arthritis is an umbrella term for several inflammatory joint conditions, while arthralgia is a medical term for joint pain without inflammation.
DMARD expand.
Disease Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs.
How are WBCs affected by DMARDs?
Decreased production, proliferation, function, activation/communication.
MOA allopurinol
Inhibits xanthine oxidase which synthesises uric acid.
MOA probenecid.
Increase uric acid conc./excretion in urine by blocking reabsorption of uric acid via kidneys.
MOA Colchicine
Binds to microtubules of neutrophils and inhibits chemotaxis.
Gout
Too many WBCs -> uric acid deposits -> synovitis
NSAIDs vs DMARDs for RA treatment.
DMARDs - arrest disease progression, slow, used in chronic cases, prevent formation of new deformities
NSAIDs - used in acute cases, rapid, cannot stop deformities, do not slow progression of disease.
Examples of DMARDs which affects WBC production/replication.
Methotrexate - via interfering with dihydrofolate reductase (DFHR) enzyme.
Leflunomide.
MOA Prednisolone
Binds to glucocorticoid receptors to inhibit pro-inflammatory signals and reduce inflammation.
Site of RA inflammation.
Synovial membrane.
