MICRO Viral Pathogenesis Flashcards
Cytopathology
Direct damage to tissues caused by cell lysis due to viral replication.
Oncogenesis
Viral infection either activates oncogenes/inactivates tumour suppressors.
Immunopathology
Damage to tissues/organs caused by the host response leads to inflammation, auto-immunity, cytokine/lymphocyte deregulation.
What must be done to enable translation of -ve sense RNA?
Transcribed first into its complement.
Describe immunopathology associated with re-infection w dengue.
Monocytes are not susceptible to dengue upon initial exposure…If pre-existing antibodies are present from a previous infection, a second exposure to dengue allows antibody-virus conjugates to bind Fc receptors -> facilitating virus uptake into these cells (which are normally non-susceptible).
