Photosynthesis Stage 1 Flashcards
Stage 1 known as
Light reactions
Overview of stage 1
Light is captured by photosynthetic pigments creating energy
This energy is used for the production of ATP from ADP and Pi and the photolysis of water
The ATP synthesised will move onto the carbon fixation stage.
The water will be split by photolysis into Oxygen and Hydrogen
The Oxygen will be released into the air
The hydrogen will be accepted by NADP forming NADPH and move into the carbon fixation stage
Production of ATP by light
Photophosphorylation
The light energy captured and absorbed by the chlorophyll and will excite electrons in the pigment molecules.
These high energy electrons will be captured by the primary electron acceptor and transferred along an electron transport chain (series of proteins in the membrane)
This transfer of high energy electrons in the chain releases energy to generate ATP by the enzyme ATP synthase
What is the energy captured from light energy used for aside from photophosphorylation
Photolysis
