Modification of the Primary Transcript Flashcards
Introns
Regions of the gene that don’t code for proteins which will be cut out of the transcript through the process of splicing.
Exons
Regions of the gene that code for proteins.
Why splicing is necessary
The primary transcript must be modified to allow translation of the coding regions on,y.
Why are there introns?
They are required to regulate transcription - by having binding sites for other chemicals that can switch off neighbouring genes.
RNA splicing
Process that removes introns from the primary transcript, the remaining exons are spliced together (order remains the same) to form a continuous sequence known as the mature transcript.
Mature transcript
Transcript obtained after the process of splicing composed of only exons which will then leave the nucleus and travel to the cytoplasm to continue protein synthesis.
