Measurement of metabolic rate Flashcards
Metabolic rate -
Quantity of energy used by the body over a given time.
Unit of metabolic rate
Kilojoules or kilocalories
3 ways of measuring metabolic rate
O2 consumption per unit time
CO2 production per unit time
Energy (heat) production per unit time
Equipment used to measure metabolic rate
Respirometer
Oxygen probes
Carbon dioxide probes
Calorimeters
Respirometer -
Measures the oxygen uptake by an organism
Calorimeter -
Measure the heat generated by an organism over a period of time, can then be used to calculate metabolic rate.
Basal metabolic rate (BMR)
The metabolic rate when an organism is at rest.
BMR compared to when the organism is active
It is low compared to when the body is active
Comparative metabolic rate rule
The greater the mass of an organism the higher that organisms metabolic rate
BMR per unit mass
Higher for smaller organisms
Why is the BMR per unit mass higher for smaller organisms
Smaller animals needs a greater delivery of oxygen to tissues around the body
