Gene expression Flashcards
Gene expression basic overview
The phenotype of an organism is determined by the proteins produced as a result of gene expression.
Phenotype- physical characteristics an organism displays.
How is gene expression influenced?
It is influenced by intra- and extra- cellular environmental factors.
How many genes within cells are expressed?
Only a fraction of genes within cells are expressed. This involves the transcription and translation of DNA sequences.
Genes needed for maintenance of specialised cells
Specialised cells will express genes needed for maintenance (e.g. enzymes) and those which code for proteins allowing the cell to carry out its specific functions. Other genes will be switched off, often meaning they will not be transcribed.
