Inbreeding Flashcards
Outbreeding
the fusion of two gametes from unrelated members of the
same species. Animals and cross-
pollinating plants are naturally outbreeding.
Why does selective breeding lead to inbreeding
a breeder selects those plants or animals with desired characteristics and uses them as the parents of the next generation. Repeating this over many generations leads to inbreeding.
Inbreeding
the fusion of two gametes from close relatives.
Inbreeding over several generations causes
the population breeds true to the desired type due to the elimination of heterozygotes.
Inbreeding depression
When a natural out breeder is forcibly inbred - The frequency of individuals who are homozygous for recessive, deleterious alleles increases. These individuals will do less well at surviving to reproduce since the chances of offspring being affected by harmful recessive traits increases.
How can inbreeding be avoided in outbreeding species
by selecting for the desired characteristic while maintaining an otherwise diverse population
