Calvin Cycle (Carbon fixation stage) Flashcards
1
Q
Part 1
A
Carbon dioxide from the atmosphere enters the chloroplast,
The enzyme rubisco fixes carbon dioxide by attaching it to Ribulose biphosphate (RuBP)
This forms 3-phosphoglycerate (3PG).
2
Q
Part 2
A
The 3PG is phosphorylated (has phosphate added) by ATP and is combined with hydrogen from NADPH to form glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (G3P)
3
Q
Part 3
A
G3P is used to regenerate the RUBP and for the synthesis of glucose
4
Q
Uses of glucose
A
Synthesised into starch - storage carbohydrate
Synthesised into cellulose
Also can become fats, proteins or nucleic acids
