Fermentation Flashcards
Fermentation conditions
Occurs in the absence of oxygen
Fermentation takes place in
The cytoplasm
ATP produced compared to aerobic respiration
Much less ATP is produced - only the net gain of 2 from the process of glycolysis
Fermentation in animal cells
Pyruvate produced from lactate converted into lactate - occurs when vigorous exercise occurs. It is a reversible reaction.
Fermentation in plant and yeast cells
Pyruvate converted to CO2 and ethanol.
It is an irreversible reaction.
Why is fermentation in plants irreversible?
The CO2 is lost from the cell.
Fermentation equation in animal cells
Glucose ——> Lactate + 2ATP
Fermentation equation in plant and yeast cell
Glucose ——> Ethanol + CO2 + 2ATP
