Define OCD
a. The dangerous event is a thought, image, or impulse
Define obsessions
i. Intrusive, non-sensical thoughts a person tries to eliminate
Define compulsions
i. Thoughts or actions used to suppress obsessions and provide relief
What are the four most common types of OCD, in order of prevalence?
a. Symmetry/ exactness
b. Forbidden thoughts/ actions
c. Cleaning/ contamination
d. Hoarding
What is the link between Tic disorder and OCD
a. Characterized by jerking of limbs
b. High comorbidity with OCD
Define Tourettes disorder
i. Complex tics and involuntary vocalizations
ii. 10-40% of kids have it at some point
Define Pediatric Autoimmune Neauropsychotic Syndrome (PANS) (also called PANDA)
a. OCD and tics occur after a bout of strep throat

i. Equal, but boys have earlier onset

What are drugs used to treat OCD?
i. Serotonin re-uptake inhibitors
ii. However, relapse is high when drug is discontinued
What is a psychological approach for treating OCD?
i. Exposure and ritual prevention (ERP)
1. Shows that nothing really happens when rituals stop
2. Slightly more effective than CBT
When is surgery used in OCD?
Only as a last resort
What are the DSM 5 criteria for OCD?
i. A. Presence of Obsessions, Compulsions, or Both
ii. B. Time-consuming (e.g., more than 1 hour per day) or cause distress, impairment
iii. C. Not attributable to physiological effects of a substance or medical condition
iv. D. Not better explained by symptoms of another mental disorder.
What is NICE treatment for OCD?
- Sessions 1-2: Psychoeducation
- Sessions 3-5: Cognitive Restructuring
- Sessions 6-11: Exposure and response prevention/Behavioural Experiments
- Session 12: Relapse Prevention
