What are the DSM 5 criteria for major depressive disorder?
- Five of nine symptoms in the same 2 week period
- Symptoms cause clinically significant distress in important areas of functioning
- Symptoms not attributable to effects of a substance
- Not better explained by other disorders, like schizophrenia or delusions
What is the most common and severe form of depression?
Major depressive episode
Define anhedonia
The inability to experience pleasure
Define mania
Abnormally exaggerated levels of elation or euphoria
What are the DSM 5 criteria for Manic episodes
- Distinct period of elevated mood with goal-directed energy
- Three of seven symptoms during period
- Mood disturbance causes impairment in social or occupational setting
- Episode is not attributable to the effects of a substance
Define hypomanic episodes
A less sever form of a manic episode, it doesn’t cause impairment in social/occupational setting
Define flight of ideas
During manic episode
- rapid speech from trying to expression many ideas at once
Define unipolar disorders
Disorders that stay at one “pole” of the depression-mania continuum
Define a mixed features mood disorder
An episode that features aspects of both mania and depression
Define temporal course
the pattern of depression/ mania in a patient for recurrence/ remittance
Define depressive disorders
The presence of depression and the absence of manic episodes around the episode of depression
In the context of depression, define “recurrent”
two or more major depressive episodes separated by at least two months
Define Persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia)
fewer symptoms than major depressive disorder, but remains unchanged over long periods of time, at least two years
